  How come you're taking the high quality 5.1 release and squashing the audio down to 2.0? Is that just to get lowest size?
  Maybe consider advising the audio output where you reference a 5.1 source but dont maintain it.

  I think that was a mistake on my part. I have my ready-made script set to encode the way I prefer. However, for this encode I intended to copy the audio in full 5.1 mode. I also needed to make a tiny adjustment to my script to fix the metadata that reflects some conflicting info.
  I'm just thrilled to have discovered that the Kitsune release is good after all.
  I tried to decimate it last week and it was disastrous. Got it all figured out now.
  I'll try to remember to copy the audio exactly as it is in the future.

  This SD encode used less bit rate than I would have expected. Apparently, not much was needed.
  The frame rate is properly set to 23.976
  The metadata bug has been resolved.
  Looks good on my big screen TV, so low bit rate didn't effect the quality too much.

  That makes sense. Scripts and saved settings get us all now and then.
  Also, one day I'd love someone somewhere to do a poll on whether people now prefer to open a file and have the subs pre-default to on... or off (have to be turned on).
  Personally I hate them auto-on with a passion. It feels like (best analogy I have) you go to a restaurant and the waiter insists on standing over your shoulder and reading you the menu... dude fuck off if I need your help with something I will ask for it...
  But I know chances are many people now prefer that since they get forced on in tik-tok etc so much.
  Some groups like PSA always force them on, but its definitely not ever been the Scene standard. Just one of those things that mess with my old head lol

  I often wonder why people insist on 1080p.x265 when other formats exist. These days I'm partial to 720p.x265 (yes, PSA if I can get it), but I have a bunch of 480p.x264 encodes that look just as good as 1080p.x265.
  I wonder if some are watching on their PC monitors and have no way to upscale the video, so need 1080p.
  I use a very inexpensive Android video box with Kodi as my video player. I can upscale even 400p.x264 to 1080p and they look amazing.
  You can set the subs to be off or on permanently with a switch to quickly turn them on or off if needed. I have mine set to permanently off.
  I use my TV's built in speakers. that's why I mainly do 2 channel and libfdk-aac @ 72 kbps to be close to PSA's 2 channel HE-AAC @ 72 kbps encodes.
  One thing I can't stand is chapter markers. I have them set to "do not copy" for all of my encodes.

  Another one is aspect ratio and frame encode size.
  A source encode for tv will most often be 16:9 (widescreen). This means the frame width-to-height ratio is equal to 16/9, or 1.78.
  If you divide the width by 16, then multiply by 9 you get the height - ie 1920:1080 1280:720 1024:576 960:540 etc.
  With playback, on most players it doesn't matter what your frame size is, because the aspect ration that is set will override it. So for example if you had an old 4:3 square tv format file at say 640x480 and set it to 16:9 aspect ration - it will get stretched sideways and look nasty (or squashed up the other way if say 1280:720 set to 4:3 aspect ratio).
  We've all seen that at some point somewhere. so what's my point you say?
  Well groups still to this day encode at what I call nonsense frame sizes - like 720x400.
  It's nonsense because the source is 1920x1080 (16:9), yet 720/16x9 = 405 (ie the correct screen ratio will be 720x405)
  So in the encode they actively squash up the pixel ratio (over compress it to get down to 400), then the player has to magic up extra pixels in every frame for the screen when it's told to decode it in the correct 16:9 ratio at 405.
  So if you really wanted a smaller file at 720x405 resolution to be displayed on the users screen then just encode it at 720x405 - or better yet at a known defined screen size like 960:540 that more players are likely to handle best without issues.
  This all appears to have started with P2P groups years and years ago trying another trick to save file size and then magic-ing out a watchable file by forcing the aspect ratio to fix the bad frame size in the player - but it is totally uncalled for in this day and age.
  So I noticed you encode at 720x400 Wrek and I know you'd still be seeing it on some RBB encodes etc, and thought Id write a bit explaining why it's bad - because some players or tvs will just go nope or give odd results - and even when you get a picture you have immediately guaranteed the picture quality is by some degree worse than it needed to be because of pointless extra compression and decompression.
  If your two frame numbers (width:height) are not both divisible by one number that gives you 16 & 9 - then your encode is barf.
  Obviously same rule but different divide etc for all the other movie type aspect rations. 1920:960 and 1920:800 are the other common TV ones but there are a bunch of others.

  Yes I can easily make subs turn on or off by default - I mentioned that as I saw your 1080 265 has them default to on in VLC for me and I thought that must be your preference.
  Frame size and resolution is only part of the equation obviously.
  The biggest component arguably is bitrate. A 720 can look quite stunning if it has a massive bit rate
  Likewise a 1080 can look worse if it is over compressed
  And no straight encode at any resolution will look good if the source encode is poor or the original source material is "bad" (take old war footage or stuff extracted off old worn vhs tape etc)
  Then you need really serious skills/software and mega processing power to restore stuff, down to where things now get done manually frame by frame at the extreme end.
  But at our level here 1080p is arguably best because it is a most often a one for one match of the source frame size, meaning it is a 1:1 pixel encode, which in theory means you have a head start on best quality output. Every time you reduce the frame rate you are automatically losing some percentage of quality (no matter how small) before you have even compressed the frame.
  And yes, hardware decoders can do some pretty magical things, even some of the ones built into tvs now are light years ahead of 5-10 years ago at making image quality much better than the source file would look without that support.
  But arguably the key is to encode the best looking file at a given file size with no support needed. That's what I aim for.
  All groups are different - Elite create constantly great encodes, but they do that by productively massively oversized files vs where they really need to be for a given quality. PSA get it better but have the same flaw just to a lesser degree (on 1080 anyway) - their files are around 25% bigger on average than I can make the same quality results. Some of that is due to audio settings. Also PSA seem to have a constant issue with audio sync. It can be very small to quite noticeable. They seem to know it exists as they almost always have an audio offset of a few milliseconds in their meta data. MeGusta can be awesome on one encode and meh/poor on another. They also use ASS format subs which are clunky and need some players to load decode files.
  What they all share are they use scripts run by bots with nobody ever (or maybe once in a blue moon) checking anything before they are released. At which point in my opinion you can say they really dont care about the quality of anything so long as there is quantity of whateverthefuck we can make to get clicks.
  Perhaps the biggest rules I work to are what I post is what I would (and mostly do) encode for myself, and that you can never get back quality once you have compressed it away. So if I think something isn't good enough I will do it again. I dont care about being first I just care about posting good stuff.

  That's just me being lazy. I use this as my scale setting format: -vf scale=720:-2 | 1280:-2 | 1080:-2
  That will automatically set the resize to exactly the same as the original which will, in my example video, be about 720x405 or 720x406. I say "720x400" because it's easier to type.
  You make a lot of valid points, though.
  I think a lot of us want small size for faster downloads and are willing to accept some quality loss for that. Storage is a concern as well.
  And I 100% agree about MeGusta. They use the lowest quality encode settings possible for HEVC and on top of that, don't use enough bit rate to compensate. As far as I can tell, they are the most popular group for HEVC. Go figure.
  I think PSA's audio sync issue is because of the HE-AAC that they use. I've used it in the past, but again being lazy, went with libfdk-aac instead. That's on the PSA 720p as I don't normally go for 1080p. Are there issues with the 1080p as well? Shouldn't be.
  I think Elite is gone now just like Tipix and Topaz. Rubic is gone too.
  Most of the videos I watch are tagged "rEK", then I sit and critic the encode instead of enjoying the show.
  Another good site is TFPDL, but like PSA are slow and do only random series. But do 480, 720 and 1080 and do it well.

  Ah ok, I just assumed you had copied the dimensions trying to kept to what you thought might be a std format.
  And absolutely people do want smaller size for both faster downloads and less storage space. Even if they aren't keeping them and are just holding them to watch, multi GB files add up quickly. And if you buy a nice new laptop or PC you get the plus of an SSD drive and the huge minus that greed now ensures all the manufacturers screw all buyers with the smallest cheapest drive they can and charge three times the retail rate to add a bigger size, all that after they've already done you on cheap plastic build quality and removed 80% of the ports you used to get. Its shameful.
  I could easily encode 720 265 or anything else but since my aim is best quality at smallest size that defeats my purpose. And having grown up with tvs before even VHS I dont find 4K adds anywhere near enough benefit to justify 4x the size. But some do and I cant argue the quality is higher but the encode time, up and down time and storage are all negatives. So 1080 is the sweet spot, plus the bit I mentioned above re being the native size for most tv source releases.
  The MeGusta thing is all down to volume - they cover so many releases through automation they are almost always there and quickly. Its like do McDonalds make the best burger ? No - but you can find them everywhere and you know what you're going to get. So when you know its going to be there you dont try anything else and get used to being happy with ho-hum quality. Its not terrible, and its definitely the best if its all there is, which to be fair is often the case.
  Im thinking you are right about PSA and their audio codec choice.
