Season 73, Episode 26 – “Wood You Believe It”
Eric Knowles branches out into the world of wooden antiques, learning about the history of treen and catching up with several red and blue teams across the country as they buy some memorable pieces. In West Sussex, two friends pin their hopes on a pair of decorative oak chairs, whilst in Devon, sisters Kate and Julie are confident that their musical wooden mushroom will win over the bidders at auction. In Pembrokeshire, Christina Trevanion has a go at carving traditional Welsh love spoons, and Danny Sebastian strikes the right chord with a luthier who makes acoustic and electric guitars by hand. At the end of the episode, Eric counts down the most profitable items and reveals which team has finished at the ‘top of the tree’.

In this episode, Christina Trevanion meets a man with a talent for transforming unloved tables. In his workshop, Somerset-based painter David Mendel shows Christina how he takes inspiration from classic designs and gives unwanted furniture a new lease of life. In nearby Shepton Mallet, two teams are shopping for profitable antiques with their experts. Friends and neighbours Pat and Linda have sparkly items on their shopping list, but bizarrely it’s a flamingo-headed walking cane that catches their eye when they go browsing with Raj Bisram! Over with the blues, sisters Jess and Jo vow to move on if nothing jumps out at them, so expert Thomas Forrester has his work cut out! Then it’s off to auction in Devon, where the reds and blues’ lots go under the hammer.

Season 73, Episode 24 – “Kelso 10”
Roo Irvine is in the market town of Kelso in the Scottish Borders, with a mystery object to show to shoppers. It’s small, made of silver, and has two ebonised wooden ends – but what is it? While you figure that out, two teams are bargain-hunting at a packed antiques fair. In red are married couple and keen dancers Graeme and Jackie, who plan to groove their way to victory. Their opponents in blue are long-time friends Sue and Marion, who are both into crafting. Animals are the first things to catch the teams’ attention. At one stall, expert Irita Marriott picks out a small silver elephant for Jackie, while close by, Graeme spots a wooden model of a bull, but the pair keep mooov-ing. Meanwhile, David Harper and his blues find a bronze Romanesque tazza decorated with leopards. It’s well spotted, but the price is too high! With their shopping bags bulging with collectibles, the teams head south to Carlisle, where auctioneer Paul Laidlaw gives his all-important estimates before the bids go live and, ultimately, a winner is declared.

Eric also learns about the pioneering work of the Royal College of Nursing. Meanwhile, Roo Irvine learns about the work of battlefield surgeons in the English Civil War to treat soldiers with musket wounds, and in Lichfield, Natasha Raskin Sharp is amazed to hear about Dr Erasmus Darwin and his theories of evolutions – long before those of his more famous grandson, Charles Darwin. At the end of the show, Eric lists the top six medically themed purchases in a chart countdown.

Season 73, Episode 21 – “Detling 7”
With 365 windows, 52 rooms, 12 chimneys and four wings, the New Forest boasts one of the last remaining calendar houses in the UK. Eric Knowles makes a date to visit Avon Tyrrell, a late-Victorian mansion. In the grounds of the 65-acre estate, Eric learns how its owner, Lord Manners, built the house off the back of a winning horse bet and how years later it was gifted to the youth of the nation. Hoping to make a stately profit for themselves are two teams of bargain hunters, who have hundreds of stalls at Detling antiques fair to choose from. Guiding her reds – mum and daughter Fiona and Millie – is Catherine Southon. They start their shop by looking at a selection of walking sticks until Catherine suggests they stroll on. Over with the blues – married couple Carlie and Martin – is expert Jonathan Pratt, who is having a hard time convincing them to buy silver when Carlie’s heart is set on art deco ceramics. In Chichester, auctioneer Nick Hall fields bids left, right and centre, but it’s Catherine who intrigues the bidders with her bonus buy, which she admits is a bit out there.

Christina Trevanion walks in the footsteps of generations of choristers as she visits one of England’s most ancient streets, Vicars’ Close in the Somerset city of Wells. It is the oldest continuously inhabited street in Europe. Christina has a rare, guided tour of this medieval neighbourhood with Vicars Choral singer Matthew, stopping to marvel at a 12th-century bread bin and strong box! Meanwhile, the teams are hoping for a harmonious shop when they race around the stalls at Shepton Mallet antiques fair. In red are lovers of rock music, married couple Emma and Ty. Friends and choir singers Tammy and Amanda, who are after something unusual, are in blue. With the clock ticking down, the reds try not to lose their marbles when they encounter a vintage wooden board game. Across the other side of the fair, the blues sniff out a glass jar that looks like a pepper pot – until their expert Thomas Forrester reveals its true purpose. Auctioneering duo Harry Bellin and Simon Watson are on the rostrum at the sale in Lyme Bay, hoping to realise their estimates on the teams’ lots.
