Season 1, Episode 5 - "Moses Fleetwood Walker"
Almost 70 years before Jackie Robinson is credited with breaking the color barrier in baseball, there was Moses Walker. Walker played for the University of Michigan in 1882 and was signed by the minor league Toledo Blue Stockings the following year. The team joined the newly formed American Association in 1984, a professional league that would become the modern day American League. On opening day, May 1, 1884, catcher Moses Walker took to the field and became the first player of African descent in major league baseball. Walker only played one season. He was subject to death threats and abuse, many of which were hurled by his own team mates. In 1889, both leagues officially banned blacks from playing baseball. Moses Walker was the True First in baseball, and his story is one of courage, resilience and tragedy.

Season 1, Episode 6 - "Bass Reeves"
Stage Coach Mary Fields and Deputy Marshall Bass Reeves were both frontier legends, born into slavery only to become central figures in the social history of the Wild West. In the 20th Century, black musicians reinvented popular music, laying down the beat that would become rock ‘n roll. Sister Rosetta Tharp and Disco King Mario are but two of the visionaries whose work influenced a generation of musical stars. Moses Fleetwood Walker and Simone Manuel represent athletic achievement, being respectively the first man of African descent to play major league baseball and the first black athlete to win Olympic gold in an individual swimming event. Rounding out the season are the stories of prolific inventor Frederick McKinley Jones and Shirley Chisolm, the first black woman elected to the U.S. Congress.

Although born in Brooklyn New York, the woman who was to become the first black candidate to run for a major party’s presidential nomination spent much of her childhood in Barbados. Returning to the United States as a ten-year-old, Chisolm finished her schooling and worked for a time as an educator. Her interest in politics brought her to the New York State Assembly and she subsequently became the first black woman elected to the United States Congress in 1968.
